Reagancomics (6 of 7): Getting Kinda Mean About Nancy
Oct. 26th, 2025 03:06 pm
Readers who wanted to see Reagan in an actual Captain America story could get one the following year, in Captain America v1 #344, 1988. This issue doesn't feature much of Reagan's real personality for obvious reasons, but it does acknowledge his weird tendency to call Nancy "Mommy."
( I mean, it's better than if she called him 'Daddy.' )
Judge Death 2025 Mega Special
Oct. 26th, 2025 07:46 pmI am of the camp that thinks 2000ad's Dark Judges are overused. But a Halloween special, with a story on each one of them, and an excuse for a new Bolland cover piece? No complaints!

Spirits of Violence #1
Oct. 26th, 2025 07:41 pmOh, great, another relaunch/re-titling for Ghost Rider. Yaaay...

But wait! This title actually contains some cool stuff!
Great looking new villains (could use a little less alliteration on their names, though):

The return of the Gun Nuns!

And an inventive - and therefore acceptable - way to get around the Penance Stare!

Strange Tales (2025) #1
Oct. 26th, 2025 07:33 pm
It probably only exists to maintain a trademark, but the art here is really nice! Some Young Avengers and Runaways get trapped in a Jumanji/D&D hybrid, and only the Scarlet Witch can save them.

New look at the Joker/Lex fusion
Oct. 25th, 2025 03:09 pmSomeone on Twitter said "We are witnessing levels of yaoi never conceived before" and yeah that seems apt.

Database maintenance
Oct. 25th, 2025 08:42 amGood morning, afternoon, and evening!
We're doing some database and other light server maintenance this weekend (upgrading the version of MySQL we use in particular, but also probably doing some CDN work.)
I expect all of this to be pretty invisible except for some small "couple of minute" blips as we switch between machines, but there's a chance you will notice something untoward. I'll keep an eye on comments as per usual.
Ta for now!
Reagancomics (5 of 7): Addled vs. Evil
Oct. 25th, 2025 09:48 am
Reagan starred in one of DC's highest-profile "graphic novels" of the 1980s, but he could have starred in both. The idea of using Nixon as President didn't occur to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons until some time after Watchmen's initial outline, and there are times when its Nixon is more of a stand-in or proxy for Reagan (Watchmen #8).

Doctor Strange #1 (Dec 2025)
Oct. 25th, 2025 03:28 pm
The Stephen Strange we saw in Doctor Strange of Asgard was still stinging from the loss of his Sorcerer Supreme status, and his focus was on gaining enough power to return to Earth, give Doctor Doom a bloody nose, and reclaim his title. None of that happened, because just when he’d gained the power, the way home was cut off from him.
The journey he’s on now is a difficult one. He’s still preoccupied with Earth, still feels that urgent need to return to Clea, to deal with his responsibilities there, but now he finds himself dealing with the responsibilities foisted upon him by his title of Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard. He originally sought that power out of a selfish need, so now he has to deal with those ramifications.

Reagancomics (4 of 7): Disillusionment
Oct. 24th, 2025 06:16 am
1985 was a bye year for Reagan, prominent-comic-book-wise. The Crisis on Infinite Earths passed without a single presidential address.
( My fellow Americans, and all citizens of the world, I call upon us all to stand together against the white menace of the Anti-Monitor. No arsenal, and no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women, except maybe an antimatter wall that destroys everything it touches...Bobby, this needs a rewrite. )
Reagancomics (3 of 7): Glory Days
Oct. 23rd, 2025 10:06 am
(Boosted up from 5 installments--I found even more material than I was expecting to. Warning for suicidal ideation, serious drug-use discussion.)
At first, Reagan's portrayals in comics stuck close to the template of a generic "placeholder president," with only the occasional real-life touch to give his character some color. The most notable thing about his first comic-book appearance as president is that it stars, of all people, the "Dial 'H' for Hero" duo. The year is 1981, the comic is Adventure Comics #485.
( Kids these days, always on their phones. )
